How "It Looks Great" Is the Worst Feedback You Can Get
You send a link to your work-in-progress app. Five minutes later, the reply comes back:
"Looks great!"
And you feel… nothing. Because you know that message is worthless. They didn't click anything. They didn't try to break it. They glanced at a screen, said something nice, and moved on.
That's not feedback. That's a social reflex.
The Politeness Problem
Early-stage dev is fragile. You're shipping rough edges on purpose — testing flows, validating assumptions, checking if the thing even makes sense to someone who isn't you. The last thing you need is encouragement. You need signal.
But most people aren't wired to give signal. When a friend or client opens your staging link, they do exactly what you'd do if someone showed you their kid's drawing: smile, say something supportive, close the tab. It's not malicious. It's just… human.
The problem is that "looks great" tells you nothing about:
- Whether they found the signup button.
- Whether they understood what the product does.
- Whether they got confused and gave up silently.
- Whether the thing actually worked on their browser.
And you'll never know. Because they're not going to tell you "I clicked the pricing link three times and nothing happened." They're going to tell you it looks great.
Watching What People Actually Do
There's a brutal gap between what users say and what they do. Every product team learns this eventually — usually too late, after building features nobody wanted based on feedback nobody meant.
The fix isn't better questions. It's observation.
When you can watch a real session — see the mouse drift aimlessly across the page, see three clicks on a dead element, see someone scroll past your CTA without a pause — you learn more in 30 seconds than in a dozen "looks great" replies. You see hesitation. You see confusion. You see the exact moment someone gives up.

The scroll-past. Your most important feature sits below the fold. Three out of four test users never scroll to it. They give you feedback on the half of the app they actually saw.
The rage click. Someone hammers a button five times because the loading state doesn't show. The action fires five times. Things break. They close the tab.
None of this shows up in a Slack message that says "looks great."
Why This Matters More at the Early Stage
Later in a product's life, you have analytics. You have funnels and heatmaps and A/B tests. You have enough traffic to see patterns statistically.
At the early stage, you have none of that. You have three friends, one client, and a coworker's partner who "does UX." Your sample size is tiny, which means every session is disproportionately valuable.
If you only get five people to test your thing, you cannot afford to waste any of those sessions on unobserved, unrecorded interactions that end with a thumbs-up emoji. You need to see exactly what happened — every click, every scroll, every hesitation, every failed request.
This isn't about being obsessive. It's about being efficient with the small amount of attention you can get.
Making It Easy to Capture Real Behavior
The traditional approach is screen-sharing calls. Schedule a time, share a Zoom link, ask them to think out loud. It works, but it doesn't scale — even to five people. Nobody wants to schedule a call to test your MVP.
What you want is passive capture: send a link, let them use it naturally, and review what happened afterward. No scheduling. No awkwardness. No performative "I'm testing it now" behavior that skews everything.

If you're reviewing session replays for an early-stage product, here's what actually matters:
Where do they pause? Long pauses usually mean confusion. Either the copy is unclear, the layout is disorienting, or they're looking for something that isn't there.
What do they click that isn't clickable? This tells you what they expect to be interactive. It's free UX research — they're showing you the interface they assumed you built.
Where do they drop off? The exact moment someone closes the tab is gold. It's the point where your app stopped being interesting or started being frustrating.
What errors fire? Console errors, failed requests, unhandled states — things you'd never catch on your own machine because your dev environment is pristine. DemoTape captures these alongside the visual replay, so you see the user's experience and the technical failure in the same timeline.

Watching real sessions is humbling. You'll see someone struggle with something you thought was obvious. You'll see your carefully crafted onboarding flow get completely ignored. You'll see someone spend 90% of their time on a feature you considered throwaway.

"It looks great" protects your feelings. Session data protects your product.
